Portugal has launched a key update to simplify the stress on residence permit holders experiencing administrative backlogs.
Under the new guideline, any residence permit ready to cease between February 22, 2020, and June 30, 2025, will be automatically prolonged and remain valid until October 15, 2025.
This automatic extension applies to non-EU citizens living in Portugal, including Expats, Digital Nomads, Students, and foreign employees.

They will not be required to take immediate action, as their lawful status will remain authentic throughout the duration.
WHY THIS MOVE IS IMPORTANT
The action is formed to facilitate immigration procedures and provide a lawful specification to thousands of international residents and travelers caught in extended bureaucratic delays, mainly people impacted by long wait durations at the Institute of Registries and Notary (Instituto dos Registos e do Notario or IRN).
Portugal’s immigration services are currently facing a major backlog, which is resulting in long delays in the provision and renewal of residence permits.
To deal with this, authorities have launched an automatic extension to deter distractions from lawful visits and protect entry to important services like healthcare, employment, and education.
Hence, significant modifications will start from October 15, 2025.
- Permit holders who present a renewal request by 15 October 2025 will receive an extra 180-day extension (nearly six months) from the date of their request.
- To be qualified, candidates must offer evidence of presentation, such as a verification email or receipt from the Institute of Registries and Notary (IRN) or the official immigration platform.
- No extensions will be awarded after 15 October 2025 to persons who neglect to present a renewal application by the final date.
These changes are part of wider actions to manage the administrative backlog while ensuring that international residents stay lawfully covered.
If your residence permit is ready to cease and drops within the protected duration, these extended grace periods provide an important opportunity to update your lawful status in Portugal.
Hence, the final date of 15 October 2025 is fast approaching, and neglecting to act early could damage your liberty to settle, get employed, and travel within Portugal and the wider Schengen Region.
HOW TO GET READY FOR YOUR RESIDENCE PERMIT RENEWAL
- Review your qualification
Go to the official webpages of the IRN or SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) to verify that your permit falls within the protected duration and to check the list of needed documents.
- Assemble the needed documents.
Make sure you have all relevant documents prepared, which include:
- An authentic passport
- Evidence of address in Portugal
- Your present or expired residence permit card
International citizens are strongly motivated to start the renewal procedure soon before the final date, 15 October 2025.
People who neglect to present a renewal request early will not be qualified for automatic extensions, and their residence status may become unauthentic, resulting in legal and logistical difficulties.
