The college of Science and Engineering of the the Texas Christian University has announced scholarship for Master of Arts in Teaching of Mathematics.
Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program in mathematics serves to prepare highly qualified teachers of mathematics at the secondary and two-year college levels. The program provides a broad knowledge of mathematics and its history, teaches problem solving skills, and exposes students to the general philosophy of mathematics alongside specific techniques for teaching mathematics. The degree plan includes 24-27 hours of graduate mathematics courses together with 9-12 hours of graduate education courses. Class sizes are small and the courses are scheduled in a flexible manner to accommodate the needs of full-time teachers.
Since the inception of the program in 2000, many students have graduated with the MAT degree in mathematics. Their success stories and employment opportunities offer a true measure of the program’s effectiveness. Graduates have pursued doctoral degrees in Mathematics Education, obtained instructor positions at colleges, and served as department chairs or lead AP teachers. Award-winning professors, faculty expertise in a wide range of research areas, and abundant opportunities for one-to-one student and faculty interaction characterize our program.
Master of Science in Mathematics
TCU’s Master of Science (MS) degree in mathematics features both a pure and an applied track. The pure track primarily prepares students for doctoral work in mathematics, whereas the applied track equips students with mathematical tools applicable in industry. The program provides a broad knowledge of mathematics and its history, teaches problem solving skills and exposes students to the general philosophy of mathematics. The pure track includes 36 hours of graduate mathematics courses; the applied track allows up to six hours of approved graduate science courses to count toward the 36-hour total. Class sizes are small and the courses are scheduled in a flexible manner to accommodate part-time students. Award-winning teachers, faculty expertise in a wide range of research areas and abundant opportunities for one-to-one student and faculty interaction characterize our program. All of our graduate students are trained in data science and mathematical computation.
Accepted MAT/MS students receive free tuition and a stipend of $10,000 per year (as of 2023), and these students assist in the Department of Mathematics by tutoring in the mathematics clinic and teaching (no more than one course per semester). The application should include the following documents:
- Transcripts from all college work
- A CV/resume
- Three recommendation letters from professors
- and a personal statement of purpose;
- GRE test scores are recommended.
Additional items are required for international students. The application deadline for Fall admission is February 1 of the relevant year, and applications received after that will also be considered if not all positions have been filled.
