Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Electric Utilities (Director) is responsible for overseeing and ensuring effective operation and administration of the municipal electric utilities (MEUs) for the Town of Berwick (ToB), the Town of Mahone Bay (ToMB), and the Riverport Electric Light Commission (RELC). The Director will collaborate with the MEUs and AREA leadership teams to identify critical priorities within each entity and establish a thorough, stepped action plan for execution. The Director will also lead and supervise a diverse team of skilled professionals and oversee procurement and project management services for all municipal programs in the electric utilities.
The Director will build trust and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, MEUs and government representatives, elected officials, and regulators, demonstrating a continued commitment to establishing and building relationships that support organizational goals. The Director will develop and implement plans for optimizing operational effectiveness and efficiency and ensure that the operation of the MEUs consistently adheres to best practices and standards in the areas of quality, planning, client services, environmental sustainability, safety, and continuous improvement. They will oversee the creation and implementation of both short- and long-term operating and capital plans and ensure performance metrics are developed to measure the ongoing success of the MEUs’MEUs’ shared goals and objectives in building sustainable, energy-efficient communities for the future.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
As the ideal candidate, you bring a strong track record of leadership experience in a complex, dynamic, unionized and non-unionized, multi-stakeholder environment, preferably within a regulated utility business. A broad understanding and experience working within an electrical utility is an asset. With a strong willingness to learn and exceptional communication skills, you can understand technical information to distil and communicate key messages to a range of audiences to build buy-in and support for initiatives. You are innately customer service-focused and have demonstrated the ability to identify opportunities to create operational efficiencies and the business systems necessary to lead a utility’s operations successfully and effectively.
An outstanding relationship builder with strong collaboration and negotiation skills, you can work and partner effectively with various stakeholders, including regulators, government representatives, elected officials, community leaders, and residents. You are pragmatic and possess a proven track record of evidence-based decision-making and solving complex problems. Finally, you are a high-integrity leader who engenders trust and embodies a deep commitment to cultivating a positive working environment.
