The Finnish authority has revealed a new list of professions facing crucial labor shortages in 2025, generating new prospects for skilled international experts to get work-based residence permits.

Based on the report, just 42,200 residence permits were awarded to international employees in 2023, representing a 13.76% reduction from 2022.

The downward trend continued in 2024, with only 11,000 work permit requests filed, a reduction of 4,000 compared to the previous year.

LIST OF SHORTAGE PROFESSIONS

  • General practitioners and experts are needed to have a medical program and an authentic license.
  • Audiologists and speech therapists are required to have a necessary program together with occupational certification.
  • Metal processing operators are required to have technical experience and sector-particular internships.
  • Nurses and nursing aides are anticipated to hold health-associated education certificates.
  • Dental hygienists are required to have adequate dental licenses.
  • Funeral directors are needed to complete professional internships necessary to their position.
  • Firefighters are required to indicate physical fitness and complete an expertise internship.

MAJOR CONDITIONS

The permit is bound to the employer and role, and candidates are required to satisfy so many qualification conditions:

  • Verified employment offer: The employment offer must be true, aligned with the candidate’s experiences, and provided by an enrolled Finnish employer.
  • Necessary certifications: Candidates are required to hold adequate academic and occupational certifications.
  • Least salary: Depending on the employment classification, the provided income must satisfy the minimum monthly earning threshold.
  • Authentic passport and insurance: An authentic passport and extensive health insurance are compulsory.
  • Clean criminal history: Candidates are required not to have a criminal setting or be subject to a Schengen Region access prohibition.
  • Further documents: Most positions may require accompanying documentation such as housing information, job contracts, and family documents if dependents are attached.

Residence permits are typically awarded for 12 to 24 months, with the option to renew if the job continues.

The Finnish government is enforcing new laws that could require quicker departure from the nation for international employees who forfeit their employment to enhance the efficiency of the immigration procedure and guarantee that only vibrantly hired persons maintain work-based residence privileges.

While the Information Technology industry has conventionally enticed the biggest number of international experts, permit authorizations in the area have reduced in recent years. Increasing unemployment rates among tech graduates and high demand for highly expertized positions add to the adjustment, making the industry more competitive for employment searchers.

Regardless of the regulatory changes, Finland continues to provide compensation for skilled international employees, which includes a stable employment market with clear routes to permanent residency, increased living measures, healthcare, and infrastructure, family reunification liberties, and access to public services for dependents.
